Sparkling wine with style and substance in the $21 range

Brown Brothers Pinot Noir Chardonnay Pinot Meunier (Non Vintage)

Brown Brothers Pinot Noir Chardonnay Pinot Meunier (Non Vintage)

A standout among $21 sparkling wines

This is the Non-Vintage (NV) sparkling wine from the family-owned Victorian wine producer Brown Brothers. Non-vintage styles are for refreshing, easy drinking, casual settings. This ticks all those boxes but also brings complexity and substance where most sparkling wines at this price point do not.

Terrific really. Of course you have to factor in price but for the dosh, this is a lovely bottle of bubbles.

"Brown Brothers’ sparkling whites are often underestimated. They’re routinely the winery’s best offerings – and beat most, if not all, in their class."

"Terrific really. Of course you have to factor in price but for the dosh, this is a lovely bottle of bubbles. It tastes of green and red apples and has lots of lemony, sherberty tang, its inherent yeastiness completely integrated into the fresh fruit drive of the wine. It finishes toasty and has remarkable length. Great value."

It starts well, stays well, and finishes well

"This matches fruit flavour, aged complexity and the benefits of dosage with aplomb, the effect not-too-sweet, not-too-dry, well styled and yet generous."

Why is this a great value wine?

Apart from the accolades from prominent wine writers, there are a few clues that would point toward Brown Brothers as a good choice for a $20 sparkling:

Brown Brothers Vineyards

Brown Brothers Vineyards

  1. It is from a great region (King Valley) for the grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) and a great region for the wine style (sparkling). You can read more about why matching region and variety is important when choosing wine.

  2. It is from a producer with a great reputation. Choosing the cheaper wine from a reputable producer is a great way to find value. Often the quality control and attention to detail that delivers their top-shelf wines also applies to the everyday offerings. Brown Brothers also has some of Tasmania's best sparkling wine in its stable, so it is a strength that extends beyond the Victorian operations.
